How to Use Alipay and WeChat Pay as a Foreigner

Step-by-step tips for setting up mobile payments before you arrive, plus backup options when apps do not work.

Mobile payment is the norm in China. For visitors, Alipay and WeChat Pay are the two apps that matter most.

Setting up Alipay

Download the app before you leave, link an international bank card, and complete identity verification. Once set up, you can scan QR codes at restaurants, shops, and transport counters.

WeChat Pay basics

WeChat Pay works inside the WeChat app. Some international cards are supported, but availability varies by region. Set it up early so you have time to troubleshoot.

Backup payment methods

  • Carry a small amount of Chinese yuan in cash
  • Keep one Visa or Mastercard for hotels and larger stores
  • Ask your hotel to help with app setup if needed
